Main customer is the player South Korean GOM-TV, and is more popular in South Korea than any other media player. Key strengths inherited from libavcodec include the powerful ability to play media files, including flv -., No need for external codec and the ability to play some broken media files. Both features are present in other projects using libavcodec like VLC and MPlayer, but are absent from some other media software, including Windows Media Player.
The word gom (곰) means “bear” in Korean, and as such GOM Player uses a bear’s paw as a symbol.
The initial installation is standard, like any other Windows product: accept a pair of terms, set a destination folder and choose to accept or reject an offer of AVG. After completing the installation, GOM will guide you through a process of optional configuration to optimize the initial use based on sound and monitor settings.
You will be taken to a window default 4:3 ratio with a theme of orange, black and silver that will make you wonder if Halloween came early. Their token playback tools such as play, stop and skip forward and back are in the lower left corner, and control panels to manage multimedia content found on the opposite side. In the center is a small, integrated ticker upsell users to link to any of the other products GOM or video content. Although this can be removed easily by switching to another skin, is much less intrusive than other product promotions attempts we’ve seen in many other applications.
Just over a timeline that is extremely narrow, which is fine for standard keyboard / mouse users, but hardly ideal for touch. Click anywhere on the player will present more detailed options and settings audio / video related similar to those found in other open source players. You can add custom audio equalizer effects, adjust subtitle lengths, and even take screenshots burst to capture the special moments of videos. However, some of the language was a bit confusing: GOM screen rotation labels like “flip / out.” Not a deal breaker by any means, but not a solution much work either.
Advanced users have the additional option to set custom hotkeys and even synchronize your remote iOS and Android tablets and phones to control the media player via Wi-Fi. And although this feature works mostly, playback and navigation with errors less than stellar do this prime time-ready.
But when it comes to video playback, GOM was not far behind. Videos played and looked like they should, and it was pretty easy to gradually adjust your picture settings during live play.
If you choose this or VLC, both are solid media players, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. GOM is doing much, and although some of these attempts could use a little work, your kernel mode is solid as a rock: see your favorite Global Starcraft II League (GSL) teachers duke it out in this season of GSL.
