XBMC is a free and open source multimedia player developed by the XBMC Foundation, a consortium nonprofit technology. XBMC is available for various operating systems and hardware platforms, a software user interface 10 feet for use with televisions and remote controls. Allows users to play and watch most of the videos, music, podcasts such as the Internet and all popular digital media files from local storage media and network.
It is a popular alternative to Windows Media Center HTPC (Home Theater PC) use. XBMC is highly customizable: a variety of skins can change your appearance, and several plug-ins allow users to access content online services such as YouTube, Spotify, Grooveshark and Pandora Radio. Versions 12.0 (codename “Frodo”) have a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) graphical interface for live TV with electronic program guide (EPG ) and high-definition digital video recorder support (DVR or PVR ) .
The software was originally produced as an application of multimedia center called “Xbox Media Center” for the game console original Xbox, and was later made available under the name “XBMC” as a native application for Android, Linux, BSD, Mac OS X, iOS and Microsoft Windows operating systems . It is also available as a standalone version called XBMCbuntu.
Due to the nature of open source , cross-platform , with its core of code written in C + + ( ANSI standard), modified versions of XBMC along with a JeOS have been used as a suite of software appliance on a variety of devices, including smart TVs , set- top boxes , digital signage, hotel TV systems , and network connected media players. Applications of derivatives such as MediaPortal, Plex, and Voddler tofu have been spun off from XBMC. Some of them, like Boxee , have been certified by the XBMC Foundation and developers and are designated as “Powered by XBMC ” or “Designed for XBMC ” .
XBMC supports most common audio, video and image formats, playlists, audio visualizations , slideshows , weather forecasts reporting, and third-party plugins . It supports network (internet and LAN shares) . Unlike other applications center media such as Windows Media Center, MediaPortal and MythTV , XBMC Media Center does not [when? ] Includes a digital TV tuner , native live TV or recording functionality DVR / PVR however, has a front of DVR / PVR unified native range EPG TV -Guide interface which through a common API supports multiple back-ends through third-party add PVR client .
Plug- ins, using the Python programming language, XBMC expanded to include features such as television program guides, YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, Veoh, support movie trailer online, and Pandora streaming radio and podcast. XBMC also functions as a gaming platform on any operating system , allowing users to play mini – games developed with Python.
XBMC source code is distributed as free software under the GNU General Public License ( GPL ), which is sponsored by the U.S. organization registered nonprofit , tax-exempt , XBMC Foundation, and is developed by a global free software community of unpaid volunteers.
Although the original project XBMC no longer develops or supports XBMC for the Xbox, XBMC on the Xbox is still available via the project cleavage third-party developer ” XBMC4Xbox ” that the Xbox version of the software forked and fully took over the development and support of XBMC for the old Xbox . The end of support for the original Xbox project is also the reason that officially changed to simply ” XBMC ” from the old name ” Xbox Media Center”. The Xbox version of XBMC had the ability to launch console games , and homebrew applications such as emulators. Since XBMC Xbox version was never distributed , endorsed, or supported by Microsoft , which always requires a modchip or softmod exploit to run on the Xbox game console.
